Is It Impossible For BRS To Come To Power In 2028?

Revanth Reddy’s Congress has secured a decisive victory in the recent Municipal Elections. Some are trying to downplay the election, saying that it was not a sweep and that the BRS did not crash out.

But that is not the right way to see this election. The BRS was never out of the game in Telangana, unlike how Congress was completely out in the 2014 and 2018 elections. At the same time, Congress never completely reigned supreme either. Given that, these results are definitely a big win for Revanth Reddy.

The ruling party will naturally have an advantage in Municipal Elections, but the fact that the BRS is still very much in the game means we cannot say that Congress won just because it is in power.

Anyone who is trying to argue otherwise is simply looking for a consolation prize.

If we observe the results closely, there is another interesting takeaway. North Telangana seems to be clearly divided among the three parties. Congress, BJP, and BRS have their respective strongholds in the region.

However, South Telangana is firmly in Congress’ grip.

Hyderabad presents a unique scenario, as it usually tilts towards those in power. If this pattern repeats, it will become very complex for the BRS to win in 2028.

In such a case, the only way out may be an alliance with the BJP.

However, having an alliance with the BJP will come with its own share of problems. The BRS previously opposed the BJP tooth and nail, calling it a communal party.

The saffron party has a habit of engulfing its partners in many states. They even troubled someone like N. Chandrababu Naidu between 2014 and 2019. It is difficult to imagine someone like K. Chandrashekar Rao in such a scenario.

There should also be a reasonable explanation for allying with a party that has jailed his own daughter.

State BJP leaders oppose KCR and the BRS as strongly as they oppose Congress. Even though the BRS is out of power, they target it more than Congress. They will try their best to convince their high command not to form an alliance.

Except for the fact that they want to prevent Congress from continuing in power, the BJP will have little reason to help KCR. Their thinking may be that one more loss for the BRS could push it towards extinction, allowing them to occupy that space.

So, the coming days will be very interesting in Telangana politics.
