Politics in Andhra Pradesh has once again revolved around Tirumala and Lord Balaji, and many devotees feel it has gone too far. What should remain a matter of faith and devotion is now turning into a daily political debate.
The ongoing Tirumala laddu issue has already created tension between the ruling NDA alliance and the opposition YSR Congress Party. Instead of calming sentiments, the issue took a dramatic turn in the Legislative Council when YSRCP members carried photos and posters of Lord Venkateswara into the House.
The move led to heated scenes. Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav strongly objected, saying the sacred name of Lord Balaji should not be dragged into political fights. He reprimanded the members for using religious symbols inside the House for political arguments.
Adding to the controversy were allegations that the photos were brought into the Council without following basic decorum, further hurting the sentiments of devotees.
For lakhs of devotees, Tirumala is a place of deep faith and spiritual peace. Repeated political references, protests, and counter protests in the name of Lord Balaji are causing emotional distress among believers.
Faith should unite people, not divide them. It may be time for all political parties to step back and keep Tirumala and Lord Balaji away from political battles before more damage is done to public sentiment.
