Visakhapatnam has secured a major international recognition, winning a USD 1 million grant in the 2025–2026 Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge. Selected from more than 630 cities worldwide, the award recognises the city’s citizen-led climate resilience initiative, the Vizag–Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL).
The initiative, led by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), focuses on tackling floods, cyclones and heatwaves through hyperlocal planning and community participation. Instead of relying only on top-down administrative decisions, the V-PULL model encourages ward-level meetings, pilot projects and structured feedback systems. The goal is to combine citizen inputs with data-driven solutions to strengthen disaster preparedness.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg stated that the award reinforces the belief that citizen-driven innovation can transform cities. The grant will be used to expand ongoing initiatives, enhance disaster readiness and scale the V-PULL model to more wards across Visakhapatnam. The recognition places the city alongside global urban centres such as Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Toronto and Cape Town on the international climate innovation platform.
Politically, the development carries significant weight for AP. At a time when states compete for global investment and recognition, Visakhapatnam’s win strengthens the state government’s narrative of promoting participatory governance and urban innovation. It also aligns with the broader push to position Vizag as a key administrative and economic hub.
The award may further encourage the state leadership to highlight climate resilience and citizen engagement as central pillars of governance. As climate risks intensify along India’s eastern coastline, such initiatives offer both practical solutions and political capital. This is not just a financial grant; it is an opportunity to showcase a governance model that blends global recognition with local participation.
