India’s First Response to Khamenei’s Death

Today in a sudden surprise, since the Iran-USA war broke out for the first time, Vikram Misri on behalf of the Indian Government visited the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi to convey condolences following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. During the visit, he met Iran’s Ambassador to India Dr Mohammad Fathali and expressed India’s sympathies to the government and people of Iran.

Misri also signed the Condolence Book opened at the Iranian Embassy. The book was opened after the death of Khamenei, who was killed in air strikes during the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel. Iran has announced a period of national mourning following his death. 

The gesture by India is being seen as a diplomatic move that reflects New Delhi’s balanced foreign policy which has been criticized so far as it has titled slightly towards the USA-Israel ever since Modi’s visit to Israel. Over the decades, Iran and India have shared a long friendship story that is not just backed by economy but a strong cultural and civilization ties that root back to late old centuries.

Political observers say that while India has not officially condemned the killing yet, the act of signing the condolence book itself carries diplomatic importance however. Just after the meeting with Misri, Fathal has addressed the media once again and clearly stated that it is the USA that began the war and not us showing who are the real victims of this West Asia war.
