Pope Downplays Tensions with Trump

Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions due to the flare-ups between USA and Iran, Donald Trump took an open fight with global catholic pontiff Pope Leo XIV, who is also an American. The 70 year old Pope has been criticising Trump’s controversial administrative decisions for some time now. 

But, the relations deteriorated further when Pope Leo started making critical comments about the Iran war. This led to a direct verbal attack on Pope by Trump in his own style. Trump continued his tirade against Pope whenever he got the chance. 

Even Pope didn’t step back and recently remarked about ‘Tyrants’, which seemed be indirectly aimed at Trump. When the tussle between both these global leaders appear to be going out of control, Pope has finally decided to downplay the controversy. 

In his latest statement, Pope openly clarified that he is no interested much to have a public argument with Trump. Speaking to reporters on a flight during his Africa tour, the pope said earlier comments on ‘Tyrants’ had been misunderstood. 

The pontiff said the remarks, delivered days after a debate with the US president, had been written a fortnight earlier well before the Trump ever commented on myself. These comments from Pope might ease off tensions with Trump. 

Vice President JD Vance, who had criticised the pope’s remarks last week, welcomed his latest comments. Trump is yet to react on this matter. 

Previously, Pope questioned Trump’s hardline approach towards immigration in the current tenure without taking the latter’s name. Later, he directly expressed his dislike on Trump’s confrontation with Iran by saying that Jesus does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them. He also openly appealed to Trump to find a way and stop the war with Iran immediately. 

In reply, Trump made scathing remarks on Pope through his social media platform Truth Social. He called Pope as ‘Weak on Crime and Terrible for Foreign Policy’. Trump even posted an AI generated image of him as a Pope and later deleted it. These actions from Trump were perceived as a reply to Pope’s growing criticism.
