India is a largely secular country, and despite the presence of multiple religions, adequate harmony is established at all times barring a few occasional disturbances here and there. But a few politicians have made it a habit to make controversial comments on Sanatan Dharma and religious harmony which is leading to discussions.
Particularly we have the case of Tamil Nadu opposition leader and the former deputy CM of the state Udayanidhi Stalin, who has been frequently making problematic comments. Earlier in 2023, he created dispensation by saying that he will do everything he came to eradicate Santhan Dharma.
And today in the Tamil Nadu assembly session again made a similar comment as he said the Sanatan Dharma must be eradicated from the country at any cost. He was of the implication that this Sanatan Dharma has been creating religious split in the country and it needs to be stopped.
The fundamental point that Uday had been missing is that Sanatan Dharma had never caused any religious or communal split. It is respected and practice by crores of people in the country in a peaceful manner.
The only problematic approach here is from Uday himself who had been making unnecessarily provocative comments on this matter, opine neutral observers. These comments will not just go against the belief system of the Hindu community, but also potentially trigger communal disharmony, which is never a good thing.
Being in a respectable position, such comments are never expected from a young politician like Uday, but he appears to be firm on this stand. The repercussions were felt already as the DMK was eradicated from power but it appears that Uday hasn’t learned his lesson yet.
