The Bhojshala issue in Madhya Pradesh has once again become a major national topic after the Madhya Pradesh High Court delivered an important verdict in favour of Hindus. The court stated that the Bhojshala complex is originally a temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, also known as Vagdevi.
The verdict has triggered huge political, religious and public discussions across the country because the site has remained disputed for almost 125 years.
What Exactly Is Bhojshala?
Bhojshala is a historic structure located in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh. Historians believe it was built during the rule of King Bhoj from the Paramara dynasty many centuries ago. King Bhoj is remembered as a ruler who strongly supported education, literature and Sanskrit learning.
Many historians and Hindu groups believe Bhojshala was once a famous Saraswati temple and an important centre for education. It is said students and scholars used to study Sanskrit and ancient subjects there.
However, Muslims have long referred to the same structure as the Kamal Maula Mosque. Because of these different beliefs, the place slowly turned into a religious dispute between both communities.
Why Has The Issue Continued For Years?
The dispute became more sensitive after both Hindus and Muslims started demanding prayer rights at the same place. In 2003, the Archaeological Survey of India introduced a system to avoid clashes.
Under this arrangement, Hindus were allowed to perform puja on Tuesdays while Muslims were allowed to offer namaz on Fridays.
But problems often arose whenever Vasant Panchami festival fell on a Friday. Since Vasant Panchami is connected to Goddess Saraswati worship, both communities wanted access to the site on the same day. This created repeated tensions over the years.
What Did The High Court Say?
The Madhya Pradesh High Court examined historical records, archaeological reports and findings submitted by the Archaeological Survey of India before giving its verdict.
According to reports, the ASI survey found temple remains, Sanskrit inscriptions, broken idol pieces and several Hindu religious symbols inside the structure.
After studying the evidence, the court declared that the religious nature of Bhojshala is Hindu and identified it as a Saraswati temple. The court also cancelled the old arrangement that had allowed Muslim prayers at the site.
At the same time, the court reportedly suggested that Muslims can request separate land from the government to build a mosque elsewhere in Dhar district.
Was The Supreme Court Also Involved?
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had stepped in when Saraswati Puja and Friday namaz fell on the same day. At that time, the Supreme Court allowed both communities to offer prayers separately to maintain peace.
However, the latest major judgment came from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, not directly from the Supreme Court. Since the matter is highly sensitive, there is a possibility that the case may again reach the Supreme Court in the future.
Why Is This Verdict Important?
Many people are comparing the Bhojshala issue with the Ayodhya dispute because both cases involved historical claims, archaeological evidence and religious sentiments.
For many Hindus, this verdict is being viewed as recognition of Bhojshala’s original identity as a Saraswati temple and a historic centre of learning.
At the same time, authorities have tightened security in Dhar district to avoid tensions and maintain peace after the court decision.
