Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was heckled and pelted with eggs on Saturday evening during his Sonarpur visit where he went to meet the family of a TMC worker who was murdered during the post-poll violence.
This is the first time that Didi’s nephew made a public appearance after his party’s defeat in the recently held Assembly elections in West Bengal.
He was on his way to meet the family Sanju Karmakar, when the protesters attacked him. Reportedly, some women were standing in groups carrying eggs at different locations along the way the MP travelled to Sonarpur.
He reached Sonarpur on a motorcycle when protesters tried to physically assault him. His shirt was torn, and objects including bricks, eggs and shoes were hurled at him. Amid the chaos, the vehicle on which Banerjee was travelling was also pushed to the ground and the protesters raised “chor, chor” slogans against the MP.
Witnessing the chaos, Banerjee’s security personnel tried to shield him but Banerjee moved ahead wearing a cricket helmet for protection. Some buttons of his shirt also fell off in the melee. Yet, Banerjee moved ahead to meet Sanju’s family. Initially, there were no police personnel visible at the place.
The protesters raised “go back” slogans. Speaking to the media, the MP alleged that the attack was politically motivated and the protesters were BJP supporters.
“This is BJP-sponsored. We have come to meet victims of post-poll violence, but the police are nowhere to be seen despite repeated requests,” he said.
“If they want to kill me, let them do it. I want my dead body to be recovered from here. I will not leave these parents alone. I will approach the High Court and Governor.”
With the situation worsening, a large contingent of Central Armed Police Forces and local police reached the place and escorted Banerjee out of the area.
TMC President and former CM Mamata Banerjee took to X and wrote, “RULERS BECAME KILLER — shame on you BJP.”
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned the attack. They alleged that it was BJP’s politics of vendetta and persecution.
Responding to the allegations, BJP state president and MP Shamik Bhattacharya condemned the incident but denied the party’s role in it.
He said that his party has no connection with the incident.
