Rebels Shake The Foundations Of Didi’s Empire

Who owns the real Trinamool Congress? That has become the biggest political question in West Bengal after the party slipped into an unprecedented crisis. What looked impossible a few months ago has now turned into a full blown battle for control of the party.

The massive electoral setback suffered by Mamata Banerjee changed the political landscape completely. The loss was not limited to seats alone. It also triggered a wave of defections that weakened her grip over the party structure.

The biggest shock came when a large section of Trinamool legislators reportedly moved away from Mamata’s camp. With numbers shifting rapidly, the power equation inside the party changed almost overnight.

Sensing an opportunity, the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee escalated the fight. The group went a step further by removing Mamata from the party chairperson post and announcing a new leadership structure.

Mamata’s camp, however, is refusing to back down. It has submitted its own list to the Election Commission and maintains that the rebels represent only a minority section. Both sides are now claiming ownership of the party and its famous symbol.

The final call rests with the Election Commission. Whenever a recognized political party splits, the Commission applies the twin test by examining legislative strength and organizational support before deciding which faction deserves recognition.

This formula has been used in several high profile political battles in the past. The decisions in the Shiv Sena and NCP disputes showed that numerical strength often plays a decisive role in determining the winner.

As things stand now, the rebels appear stronger on the numbers front. But the legal and political fight is far from over. Until the Election Commission delivers its verdict, the battle for Trinamool’s name, symbol, assets and future will continue with full intensity.
