From April this year, the government of India has rolled out the mandatory sale of ethanol blended petrol in all fuel pumps across the country as part of the E20 project, which it claims to be a step towards reducing our dependence on imported crude oil.
However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from citizens across the nation as there have been numerous complaints over reduction in mileage and other fears of presumable damage to the engine and other parts of vehicles using this fuel.
Amid ongoing furore and frequent debates on social media platforms, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari completely dismissed these worries. He challenged critics to name even a single car that has actually faced problems because of E20 petrol.
Speaking at the Vikasit Bharat event, Gadkari stated that the government has not received a single official complaint about the fuel blend so far. He called the negative talk online a paid and false campaign and said the rumors are completely untrue.
According to the minister, switching to ethanol blends is highly important for the country. Right now, India spends a massive ₹22 lakh crore every year to import fuel from other nations.
By making ethanol at home, the country can save money and support local agriculture, he said. In fact, Gadkari highlighted that this move brings in an extra ₹45,000 crore of income directly to Indian farmers.
He also responded on allegations that he is pushing for ethanol because his family members own sugar factories. He denied saying his family’s businesses do not rely on making ethanol to survive.
Going by his statement, it seems like the government is not caring much about the growing backlash and go ahead with its plan to introduce even higher ethanol mixes in the future to cut down on pollution and stop depending on foreign oil completely.
