Tamil Nadu former Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police on Tuesday over his alleged double-meaning remarks involving actress Trisha, has been ordered to be released on station bail today after questioning.
During a hearing in the Madras High Court, Tamil Nadu Advocate General Vijay Narayan informed Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan that the police did not intend to remand Udhayanidhi to judicial custody. He said the police only wanted to question him and then release him on station bail.
The judge recorded the submission and directed the police to question Udhayanidhi and release him on station bail today itself.
The case was registered over remarks made by Udhayanidhi during a public meeting while criticising the CM Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government over the Cauvery water issue.
During his speech, several DMK supporters reportedly chanted “Trisha, Trisha.” Responding to the slogans, Udhayanidhi allegedly remarked, “Whether water comes or not, that water should come,” before smiling and adding, “I meant Cauvery.” The remark was widely interpreted by many as having a double meaning directed at actress Trisha.
His comments sparked a political controversy and drew criticism from the ruling TVK and other parties.
TVK filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women, seeking action against Udhayanidhi, and demanded an unconditional apology. Police later registered a case and took him into custody for questioning.
