Quite often, there has always been a public debate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign tours. While the Opposition tries to corner Modi and his government for splurging tax payers money in the name trips, the BJP claims that these tours are aimed at strengthening the diplomatic ties and to enhance the foreign policy.
For the first time in many years, the Union government has now disclosed that it spent a whopping ₹557.5 crore on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official foreign visits between 2021 and 2026. The information shared by the Ministry of External Affairs in Parliament.
The figures were provided in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, giving a year-wise break up of the expenditure on the Prime Minister’s overseas tours. Around ₹36.1 crore was spent in 2021, followed by ₹55.8 crore in 2022. The amount increased to ₹93.6 crore in 2023 and ₹109.5 crore in 2024 after COVID pandemic subsided.
In 2025, the expenditure reached ₹187.8 crore, the highest during the period, as the Prime Minister undertook more international tours. In 2026, the government has spent ₹74.5 crore so far. This covers six foreign tours across 13 countries, including visits to Europe, West Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The Prime Minister’s official travel schedule has remained busy this year with bilateral meetings, global summits and strategic discussions.
The costliest foreign visit during this period was the Prime Minister’s trip to the United States in February 2025, which cost more than ₹25.5 crore. In 2026, the most expensive visit so far was the Norway trip in May, with an expenditure of about ₹17 crore.
The government had earlier informed Parliament that the expenses usually include accommodation for the Prime Minister and the official delegation, transportation, security arrangements, venue charges, communication equipment and other administrative costs required for overseas visits.
