Indian Govt Orders Meta To Revamp Algorithm?

Social media platforms provide people with the opportunity of expressing their opinions, and it has become a tool of freedom of speech these days. But at the same time, there is the requirement on enforcement authorities to ensure that false news and misinformation doesn’t spread across these platforms.

At a time when there is a lot of emphasis to be placed on freedom of speech on social media and also the regulation of misinformation and related stuff, the government of India has issued crucial instructions to Meta.

According to the latest development, the government of India has told Meta to revamp its algorithms and provide a compliance roadmap to fight deepfakes, propaganda, and other manipulated or illegal content on its platforms.

The Ministry of IT has also asked Meta to tighten content moderation, act faster on takedown requests from authorized agencies, follow data-localization requirements, and work more closely with government to speed up detection and removal of deepfakes, morphed images, and misleading posts.

This would essentially mean that Meta owns and operates Facebook and Instagram, along with WhatsApp will have to work closely with the government of India from now on.

But at the same time, people are expressing opinions that the government must see to it that social platforms must still continue to offer people a platform to raise their voice.
