Funny! Anantha Babu Wants Bail For ‘Public Issues’!

YSR Congress MLC Anantha Babu has been in Rajahmundry Central Jail for around 110 days and is currently in remand in the case related to the killing of his driver in 2022.

Anantha Babu has approached the courts several times seeking bail, but so far, he has not received any relief.

Now, he has once again approached the Special Court in Rajamahendravaram seeking bail. This time, his reason is that he needs to attend the Assembly session beginning on August 17 and represent public issues.

It is this argument that has triggered criticism from his political opponents.

Opponents are questioning the logic behind seeking bail in the name of raising public issues, especially when the YSR Congress has decided to boycott the Assembly over the demand for Opposition Leader status for YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The YSR Congress has a majority in the Legislative Council, but the party’s stand on the Assembly has largely been centered around its protest against the government’s decision on the Opposition Leader issue.

Critics say that if the party is planning to boycott the Assembly, Anantha Babu’s argument that he needs bail to attend the session and raise public issues appears questionable.

Anantha Babu has been an MLC since December 2021. His opponents also argue that there has been little notable contribution from him to Council proceedings that would justify such a strong argument about representing public issues.

They are now asking whether the bail plea is genuinely about public issues or simply an attempt to secure temporary relief from jail.

The court will now decide whether his reason is sufficient to grant him bail. In the past, courts have granted temporary relief to legislators and parliamentarians in certain circumstances to enable them to attend legislative proceedings.

Meanwhile, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy recently held a meeting with YSR Congress MLAs and MLCs to discuss the party’s strategy for the upcoming Assembly session.

Interestingly, the focus appears to be not only on how to raise public issues but also on avoiding possible disqualification of party legislators.

Article 190(4) of the Constitution provides that a member of a state legislature can face consequences for remaining absent from all meetings for 60 days without the permission of the House.

With the YSR Congress planning to boycott the Assembly, this provision has become an important issue for its legislators.

The party therefore faces a tricky situation. Its members may need to attend the House to avoid disqualification, while the party simultaneously wants to continue its boycott as a form of protest.
