Hyderabad may face transport problems from Monday as auto drivers in Telangana have announced a strike from midnight on Sunday. The auto unions are demanding higher fares, a welfare board and better support from the government.
The unions say the prices of petrol, diesel and gas have increased, while auto fares have not been changed for many years. They also want the government to stop illegal bike taxi services and launch its own app for passengers.
Auto drivers are also asking for Rs 12,000 yearly financial help and relief from e challans. They want autos from other districts to be restricted from operating in Hyderabad.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has asked the drivers to cancel the strike. He said the government is ready to discuss their problems and promised to set up a welfare board.
The minister also announced a plan to provide up to Rs 1.5 lakh financial support to petrol and diesel auto owners for vehicle changes.
The government will also form a committee to study the demand for higher fares.
However, the unions have decided to continue with the strike. If the strike happens, Hyderabad commuters may face difficulties, especially during busy morning and evening hours.
