A so called survey titled ‘Mood Of Andhra’ has suddenly become a hot topic in Andhra Pradesh politics, with YSR Congress social media teams widely circulating its findings. The survey claims that the YSR Congress has 44.5 % public support, while the TDP led alliance has 40%.
It also claims that 44 percent of people believe the NDA government will not return to power. According to the same survey, YS Jagan is the preferred choice for Chief Minister with 44% support, followed by Chandrababu Naidu with 32%, Pawan Kalyan with 6% and Nara Lokesh with 5%.
The survey is reportedly being promoted across media platforms considered supportive of the YSR Congress and is now being pushed heavily on social media. It is being attributed to a group called IITians Group Hyderabad.
But the bigger question is about the credibility of the survey.
A serious political survey normally provides details about its methodology, sample size, locations covered, demographics, margin of error and the process followed to select respondents. Factors such as caste, age, gender, education, rural and urban background and economic groups also matter when trying to understand the mood of an entire state.
Simply releasing a PDF with political numbers does not automatically make it a credible survey. Without clear information about how the data was collected and analysed, it becomes difficult for people to independently judge the findings.
The survey may therefore raise more questions than answers. Whether these numbers actually reflect the ground reality in Andhra Pradesh can only be understood through credible independent surveys and, ultimately, election results.
Interestingly, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy himself has seen the difference between internal reports and ground reality. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he confidently spoke about the YSR Congress targeting a clean sweep of 175 out of 175 Assembly seats. However, the 2024 Assembly election produced a completely different result, with the YSR Congress winning only 11 seats.
That experience should be a lesson for every political party.
There is nothing unusual about an opposition party claiming that the government has lost public support. Every ruling government faces some level of anti incumbency. But for an opposition leader, understanding the actual extent of that anti incumbency is far more important than relying on reports that simply confirm what the party wants to hear.
If people around Jagan are presenting only favourable surveys and reports, he could end up getting a distorted picture of the political situation. The real challenge for any opposition leader is to know what people are actually saying on the ground, including the criticism coming from voters who may not support the party.
For now, the upcoming local body elections could provide a much clearer indication of the political mood in Andhra Pradesh. Unlike a survey circulated through social media, elections will show how people actually vote.
Until then, the ‘Mood Of Andhra’ survey may remain just another political claim. The real mood of Andhra Pradesh will ultimately be decided by the people, not by a PDF or WhatsApp forwards.
