The recent Mood of the Nation survey has sparked intense debate across political and media circles. Ranking actor turned politician and TVK party leader Thalapathy Vijay as the third most preferred choice for Prime Minister’s seat after Modi and Rahul Gandhi has caught the attention of everyone.
It is completely natural for fans and party workers to celebrate and hype up such poll numbers to increase his public image. However, seeing Vijay’s own cabinet ministers aggressively leading this PR drive and trying to project him as a national icon based on a single survey is very shocking because of various practical reasons.
He is a novice political leader who won the Chief Minister’s seat in a historical electoral victory due to different factors. Due to his massive stardom built over the decades and also because Tamil Nadu voters were desperately seeking a fresh alternative to the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK, Vijay managed to make a stupendous political debut and clinch the coveted post.
It is far too early to measure Vijay’s true political weight as he is only a few months into his term, with a long road of administrative and political hurdles ahead of him. Taking a regional party and expanding it into a successful national organization requires immense effort, deep roots, and decades of groundwork.
History shows that even established regional giants like the TDP, DMK, and AIADMK struggled to expand their footprint beyond their home states despite strong leadership. Recent attempts by parties like the BRS failed miserably when they tried to go national, while the AAP has also found expansion extremely tough after a certain limit.
Even seasoned political heavyweights with decades of experience such as Chandrababu Naidu and Mamata Banerjee tried to shape national politics using their personal charisma and regional dominance. Yet, they didn’t achieve the ambitions pursuit.
This over-the-top push by Vijay’s ministers could easily turn into a self-goal and boomerang one day because Vijay has not yet proven his governance credentials or delivered fully on his state-level promises.
Public opinion polls and surveys by psephologists come and go, but long-term credibility is built through solid administration and better ideology that suits the majority in the country.
Expecting an inexperienced leader like Vijay to jump into the national politics straightaway and dictate terms just with one term as Chief Minister is nothing but shooting for the stars and aiming for moon even before building a rocket.
