Konda Surekha has reacted to the reports of her removal from the Telangana state Cabinet. She said she would continue in the Congress and focus on the development of her constituency as an MLA. Surekha said she had not responded to remarks made by her daughter because she wanted to protect her daughter’s dignity. She maintained that she had done nothing wrong and questioned why she should be punished or humiliated for someone else’s comments. “I will remain in the Congress. As an MLA, I will continue working for the development of my constituency,” Surekha said.
Konda Surekha directly hit out at CM Revanth Reddy. She said Revanth Reddy does not have the same level of communication with people and party leaders that former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy had. “Revanth Reddy does not have the kind of communication with people and leaders that YSR had,” an emotional Surekha said.
Surekha questioned why she was being held responsible for remarks made by her daughter when other Congress leaders had made controversial statements against senior leaders in the past. “Did Mallu Ravi not criticise the Congress in the past? Did Rosaiah not make remarks against Indira Gandhi? Did Jaipal Reddy not criticise Indira Gandhi? No action was taken against them,” Surekha said.
“Why should I be held responsible for the statements made by my daughter?” she asked. Surekha said she was not upset about losing her ministerial position. “I have no pain over losing my ministerial post. Those who once came to us, touched our feet and asked us to help them win are now criticising us,” she said.
Konda Surekha asserted that she and her supporters continued to have public support. “We have the strength of the people. Nobody can do anything to us,” Surekha said. Surekha added that the ministerial position was only an additional honour and that losing it would not affect her politically.
“For us, the ministerial post was only an ornament. Not having it does not cause us any loss,” she said. Surekha also claimed that several ministers and MLAs were unhappy with the functioning of the government. “Today it happened to me. Tomorrow it could happen to you. Come out and speak. Work is not getting done in this government,” she said.
Konda Surekha alleged that the government was largely limited to receiving petitions from people without resolving their problems. “We are only receiving petitions. Nothing much is being done,” Surekha said.
Surekha also said the government needed to conduct surveys to understand the public mood. She claimed that removing a woman minister would damage the Congress at the national level. At the same time, Konda Surekha said she would not ask the Congress leadership to reconsider its decision to remove her from the Cabinet. “I will not ask them to reconsider the decision to remove me,” she said.
On the Yadadri temple committee issue, Surekha alleged that the decision had not been taken after consulting everyone concerned. Konda Surekha made mature statements even after she lost her minister post. Now it needs to be seen what will be the Congress party’s stand and further action.
