An unwanted controversy broke out during the BRS protest today at Telangana Assembly. The BRS protest might be against the Congress government, but BRS seems to have scored a self-goal. BRS MLC Thatha Madhu’s controversial comments against Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar have emerged as a major embarrassment for the party. While there were tense moments outside the Assembly, including pushes and arguments between police and BRS leaders KTR and Harish Rao, the controversy over Thatha Madhu’s remarks has overshadowed the party’s larger political fight.
Speaker Prasad Kumar became emotional and broke down in tears in the Assembly after Congress leaders condemned the remarks. Minister Seethakka said it was deeply painful that the Speaker’s mother had been insulted. Visibly emotional, Prasad Kumar later said Seethakka had been tying him a Rakhi for the past five years and that he could not control his emotions when she cried in the Assembly. The Speaker also said the Assembly would pass a resolution on Thatha Madhu’s comments and send it to the Legislative Council.
Meanwhile, CM Revanth Reddy launched a sharp attack on the BRS, calling the incident a “dark day for Telangana” and an insult to the people of the state. He alleged that BRS members had been deliberately provoked after meeting party chief KCR and said the incident was not accidental but part of a planned strategy.
The controversy has given the Congress a strong political weapon, with the ruling Congress accusing the BRS of insulting the constitutional office of the Speaker. BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy also condemned Thatha Madhu’s remarks and demanded action against him.
Facing heavy criticism from all corners, Thatha Madhu later attempted to control the damage. He said he respected Speaker Prasad Kumar and claimed that words he never used were being attributed to him.
“I did not make any remarks against the Speaker. If my comments were understood that way, I would withdraw them and express regret,” Thatha Madhu said. He claimed that he had made the comments in anger against those who allegedly attacked him and tried to choke him.
However, the damage may already have been done. For the BRS, what began as an aggressive political protest against the Congress government has been overshadowed by Thatha Madhu’s remarks, giving the ruling party an opportunity to turn the spotlight from the BRS’s protest to an alleged insult of the Speaker and his mother.
