Hyderabad Airport Passenger Traffic Falls: What’s Happening?

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad has been witnessing a noticeable drop in passenger traffic, raising questions about the reasons behind the decline.

According to the latest figures, around 21.86 lakh passengers travelled through Hyderabad airport in August. This is significantly lower than the 24.70 lakh passengers recorded during the same month last year.

The decline was seen in both domestic and international traffic. Domestic passenger traffic reportedly fell by around 13.6%, while international passenger traffic saw a sharper decline of nearly 26%.

The fall in international traffic is particularly important for Hyderabad as the airport has strong connectivity with the US, Middle East and several other international destinations. Changes in international travel demand and geopolitical developments can directly affect these routes.

The situation is not limited to passenger numbers. Flight movements at the airport have also declined. Hyderabad airport recorded around 14,583 flight movements in August, which is about 14.2% lower than the same month last year.

Several factors are being linked to the weaker air traffic. Rising aviation fuel prices can increase operating costs for airlines and affect ticket prices. At the same time, ongoing global conflicts, changes in international travel patterns and economic uncertainty can impact passenger demand.

The Hyderabad airport has also been affected by changes in international connectivity and airline operations. A fall in overseas traffic can have a wider impact because international passengers also contribute significantly to airport revenues and related businesses.

Interestingly, Hyderabad is not the only major airport facing this trend. Reports suggest that passenger traffic has weakened at several major Indian airports, while Delhi has remained relatively stable.

The August numbers therefore point to a broader slowdown in air travel rather than a Hyderabad-only issue. The coming months will show whether this is a temporary decline or the beginning of a longer trend.
