The Bombay High Court has strongly criticised the remarks made by BJP leaders against actress Dia Mirza over her firecracker awareness video. The court reminded everyone that India is a secular country and environmental concerns should not be given a religious or political colour.
The controversy started after the BMC included Dia Mirza in its campaign promoting an eco friendly Diwali. She urged people to avoid bursting firecrackers on public roads, referring to the Bombay High Court’s directions. However, Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam objected to her participation, following which the BMC removed the video.
Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde also criticised the actress, calling her anti Hindu and alleging that she had taken an anti government stand. Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane questioned why similar environmental awareness messages were not shared during Eid and other festivals.
Reacting to the controversy, the Bombay High Court expressed displeasure over the political remarks and said everyone, irrespective of religion or caste, breathes the same air. The bench observed that the issue was purely related to the environment and should not be given any other angle. It also directed the BMC to restore Dia Mirza’s deleted video.
The court further reminded public representatives about the importance of secular values and social harmony. It observed that a city like Mumbai survives on togetherness and that unnecessary political comments should not disturb this spirit. The court’s strong observations have once again brought the discussion back to the importance of keeping environmental awareness above religious and political differences.
