As speculated, TRS veteran K. Kesava Rao’s daughter and party corporator from Banjara Hills, Gadwala Vijayalakshmi was elected as the Mayor GHMC. The BJP fielded Radha Dheeraj Reddy who won as corporator from RK Puram division. Election officer Shweta Mohanty conducted the elections and declared Vijayalakshmi as the winner.
The MIM also supported the TRS candidate in the Mayor election.Tarnaka Corporator Mothe Srilatha won as the Deputy Mayor of GHMC.It was a happy moment for the women corporators as both the top posts were occupied by women.The TRS and BJP fought for both the posts but candidates of the former party, with the help of MIM emerged victorious.
Before the Mayoral elections, the oath-taking ceremony of new corporators was organised and the newly-elected urged the authorities to allow them to take the oath in the language convenient to them and Ms Mohanty obliged to their request.
As many as 149 corporators took oath on Thursday. Of the 150 corporators in the Corporation, the TRS has 56 and BJP has 48, MIM 44 and the Congress has only two. The TRS has 32 ex-officio members, BJP 2 and MIM had 10. The Mayor’s election should have a quorum of 97 members and with the help of MIM, the TRS strategically won the polls. The TRS did not take the help of ex-officio members in the polls.
Vijayalakshmi is married to Bobby Reddy and stayed in the US for 18 years. In 2007, she returned to India, gave up her US citizenship to join her father in politics. In 2016, she contested as a corporator with TRS ticket and won with a huge majority. She did graduation in law and journalism.
