A major fire broke out in the newly constructed crude processing unit of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) in Vizag city. Being a refinery, post the fire, thick smoke engulfed the area of Malkapuram and this has sent a panic wave among the locals.
The visuals of the fire and thick smoke were caught on camera by the residents and they also informed the police and fire department immediately. According to the locals at around 3 PM, a huge blast noise was heard.
Learning about this mishap the fire and Indian navy personnel rushed to the spot. The situation was brought under control and as per the preliminary information no casualties have been reported.
Simultaneously the HPCL has launched a probe into the mishap. More details are awaited.
Off late fire mishaps that too in industrial corridor are becoming frequent in the beach city. Since Vizag is the Executive Capital, the state government has to review the safety measures being followed at all the major plants established here.
