Posting News on Social Media? New IT Rules May Apply to You

The Indian government has proposed amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, to bring news and current affairs shared by ordinary social media users within the regulatory framework previously applicable only to publishers. The draft also mandates that platforms legally comply with government directions, with feedback invited until April 14, 2026.
