Table topper Delhi Capitals played its last league match the other day against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The latter won the game in a last-ball thriller, all thanks to the stunning batting performance of uncapped player KS Bharat.
RCB needed 15 runs off the last over. This edition’s second-leading wicket-taker Avesh Khan was handed over the ball for the final over. In-form Glenn Maxwell hit the first ball for the four and took two runs off the next ball. He took a single on the third ball and gave the strike to Bharat.
The equation was 8 runs off 3 balls. Avesh bowled a cross-seamed outside off delivery which Bharat missed completely. Hence, it ended up as a dot. When Bharat missed the ball, Avesh had a smile on his face. Then, the commentator Sunil Gavaskar said, “Yorker again. Yes, don’t smile as yet young man. Two more deliveries to go. Remember the saying ‘One who has the last laugh'”
Bharat took two runs off the next ball and then, Avesh bowled a wide. The equation came down to 6 runs off 1 ball. Bharat held his nerves well but Avesh didn’t. The former had hit the ball out of the park and gave a memorable victory to the Bangalore franchise.
After the match, the words of Gavaskar went viral on social media. Netizens said that it was a gem of a statement from the former cricketer. They opined that no one should celebrate early because the match isn’t over until it’s over.
Here are some of the tweets about Gavaskar-Avesh’s incident:
