Australia achieved a remarkable victory in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Melbourne. Chasing a target of 340 runs, Team India failed miserably with the bat, getting all out for just 155 runs. Australia won by a massive margin of 184 runs, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
In India’s batting, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal fought valiantly, scoring 84 runs. However, the rest of the batsmen failed to provide him support. Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant had a brief 88-run partnership, but Pant was dismissed for 30 runs. After Pant’s departure, India’s batting collapsed completely. While Telugu youngster Nitish made a century in the first innings, he could only manage a single run in the second innings before getting out.
India’s bowlers also struggled to contain the Australian batsmen. Australian captain Pat Cummins stood out with his excellent performance, taking 6 wickets across both innings and being named the Player of the Match. Alongside Cummins, Scott Boland took 3 wickets, and Nathan Lyon claimed 2 wickets, dismantling India’s batting order.
This defeat has sparked criticism of India’s performance, particularly the inability of top-order batsmen to show any stability at crucial moments. With the final Test left, India will need to win to level the series.
