India has this rich history of producing some of the greatest ever batsmen in the history of the sport. Two such refined cricketing talents that India had produced are Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
Coming to the topic now, the nearly untouchable record that was earlier set by Sachin Tendulkar is now likely to remain intact for more years and the retirement of Virat Kohli cements the same.
Going into the story, Sachin Tendulkar is the only player in the history of cricket to have scored 100 centuries (49 in ODI and 51 in tests). This is a mighty record that was always bound to be excruciatingly hard to even touch let alone break it.
However, Virat Kohli came pretty close to touching this record as his tally of centuries was 82(51 in ODI, 1 in T20, 31 in tests).
If there is any player in contemporary Cricket, who can pose a threat to the record held by Sachin, it would certainly be Virat Kohli. Had Kohli stayed for 3 to 4 more years in test Cricket, he might have brought up this tally marginally.
But now that Kohli has decided to retire from the test format, the record of Sachin Tendulkar is likely to stay on for many more years. With just the ODI format left in his international career, and realistically only a couple of years of high-level cricket remaining, the probability of Kohli scoring 19 more centuries seems increasingly remote. Cricket simply cannot produce players like Kohli and Sachin on a regular basis, and this is a hard fact.
So the record of hundred centuries in International Cricket is going to stay with Sachin Tendulkar for many more years now.
