Back when it was made official that Shreyas Iyer is not a part of the Indian T20 side for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament, there was a huge roar of negative feedback from the common public.
Almost immediately after the huge public uproar, speculations came out saying Shreyas Iyer is going to be a part of the ODI setup and he could even be captaining the team after the retirement of Rohit Sharma.
However, the latest developments are again suggesting another twist in the tale as it is being established that it is not Iyer who is going to be the new captain of the side, but instead, it is going to be Shubman Gill.
This statement came from none other than the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. He played down the rumours about Shreyas Iyer, replacing Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain soon.
Devajit said the news about Shreyas Iyer being the new captain is just unfounded speculation, and there is no backing to the same. He confidently said Shubman Gill is the front runner to gain the captaincy position in the ODI format after the retirement of Rohit.
This is another twist in the tale of Iyer being possibly propelled to the captaincy position in the ODI format, which is something that he truly deserves. It appears that the stars are simply not allying for Iyer who has been incredibly consistent, but is finding himself unlucky when it comes to team composition.
