Two of the most significant names in Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently preparing for the upcoming 50 over World Cup in 2027. They have opted out of the T20 and test formats in order to maintain good quality for the 50 over format.
In this context, something interesting is happening with regard to the BCCI central contract for these two legendary players.
According to the development, it is being established that the BCCI is considering the proposal of demoting the contracts for Rohit and Virat. Reportedly, the two of them could be moved out of the A+ contract and shifted to B content.
This decision has been taken in the context of the reduced participation of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the national team. Considering that the two of them are only participating in the 50 over format, this reduction is justified strategically.
The point to be noted here is that the salary that the BCCI pays to Rohit and Virat will also go down. Earlier they used to receive ₹7 crore per year with the A+ contract. This will go down to ₹3 crore once they are demoted to the B grade contract.
It needs to be noted that the salary reduction will not mean too much to these two players who are financially very sound already. But this is more about the respect that is paid to the legendary cricketers at the closing stages of their careers.
It needs to be pointed out that Rohit and Virat Kohli have been the two best players for India, even in the 50 over format. And it should have been at least respectful to maintain their existing contracts instead of demoting.
