Why Are MLAs Chasing Free IPL Tickets?

Sports and arts are to be regarded as completely independent and cohesive entities regardless of the situation. But there are times when politics tend to overpower these departments and there could be one such story in development in Karnataka.

Earlier there was a lot of administrative pressure on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise to shift their venue from Chinnaswamy Stadium, after the horrifying stampede last year which killed nearly a dozen people.

The Karnataka government and the Cabinet spent several months going forth and back and the decision on whether or not to permit RCB to play at this stadium. Finally, just a week before the start of the IPL 2026 season Karnataka cabinet issued permission for the same.

However, the latest developments are suggesting that Karnataka government has its own ways with regard to exerting more pressure on the RCB franchise.

At first, there were reports that the Karnataka Cabinet had proposed that RCB allocate four tickets per game to each MLA and MP in the state. Despite this narrative spreading widely, RCB never publicly commented on it.

While everyone expected the standard quota of RCB allocating 1 ticket per MLA, Karnataka deputy CM Siva Kumar stated “Four tickets can’t be given. Now, we have requested them to give two tickets for the family members. For tomorrow’s first match, they will get two tickets. For the next match, we will discuss later”.

It appears that the Karnataka government has started to pressurise RCB to give 4 tickets per MLA and is currently settling with 2 tickets. There is a chance that they could negotiate for more tickets for each game.

This has led to a social media backlash as people are commenting that the government might have threatened RCB about shifting the Stadium in the first place just to get their ways going with regard to tickets and other matters.

People are commenting that the government will face extreme backlash if they really went after RCB only for external pressure in the disguise of public anger.
