India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams will wear saffron jerseys instead of their traditional blue kits during next month’s FIH Hockey World Cup.
The decision has sparked debate among hockey fans and former players, with ex India captain Viren Rasquinha calling the move “embarrassing.”
Hockey India, however, defended the jersey change, saying it was made after feedback from players and coaches. According to the federation, the blue jerseys often blended with the blue playing surface, making it difficult for teammates to spot each other during matches.
Officials said the saffron jerseys provide better visibility on the field and are expected to improve on field communication and performance.
Despite the explanation, the decision has triggered mixed reactions on social media, with many fans questioning the need to move away from India’s iconic blue colours.
