The gruesome killing and chopping off a girl by her live-in partner in Delhi shocked the nation. More details are coming out as the police questioned Shraddha’s friends and the couple’s earlier landlords.
Aftab Poonawala and Shraddha Walkar had arguments for months and it was a fight over who would pay the household expenses that made Aftab kill Shraddha on May 18 evening.
Reportedly, Shraddha’s friends revealed that they had regular fights mostly over suspicions of cheating on each other. On the day of the murder, they fought over buying some household items and more issues joined in, and sometime between 8 and 10 pm Aftab Poonawala strangled Shraddha Walkar to death.
Reports say that he kept the body in the same room overnight and then went to buy a knife and fridge the next day. He allegedly chopped the body into 35 pieces, kept them in the new fridge, and got rid of them in the forest nearby over the next 18 days.
Aftab had been using her cell phone to make everyone believe that she is alive. He used bank transfers from her phone app and some Instagram chats. He told the police that she had left on her own on May 22.
Aftab and Shraddha worked in call centers in Mumbai and had been living together since last year and they moved to Delhi in May this year. After staying a week in a hotel they took a flat on rent on May 14.
Aftab led the investigators to some bones in the Mehrauli forest and they sent them to forensic land to check a match with her father’s DNA samples. Police also found some bloodstains in his flat. So far, Aftab led the police to at least 10 pieces in the 35 pieces of her body.
The knife used to chop up the body has to be found yet. Also, the severed head or any other identifiable body part remains to be gathered.
