Illegal immigration has been a long-standing problem for the US Immigration Department and Border Patrol Agency. Reportedly, 2.9 million illegal immigrants(from all countries) were apprehended at US borders with Mexico and Canada in the US Fiscal Year 2024 – October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.
Of the mentioned number of illegal immigrants, a whopping 90,415 are Indians who were caught and detained, according to the data from the US Customs and Border Protection Department.
To put these staggering numbers into perspective, every hour, 10 Indians try to illegally enter the US through the Mexican and Canadian border and in turn get arrested. Incidentally, 43,764 were arrested at the US border with Canada, making it the most concentrated illegal immigration crossing point.
Another interesting fact here is that nearly 50% of the illegal immigrants from India are Gujaratis, making Gujarat, the single largest Indian entity constituting illegal immigration at the US border.
In view of the sharp increase in the number of illegal immigrants in the country, the US border patrol has enforced increased vigilance. But streetsmart Indians continue to flock to the US border through Mexico and Canada, say reports.
