Punjab’s former Deputy CM, Sukhbir Singh Badal has resigned as the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) after being found guilty of religious misconduct. Thus, Akal Takht (the highest religious authority in Sikhism) punished him by ordering him to wash dishes and clean shoes at the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Other SAD leaders were also punished for their actions and given similar punishments. They were asked to serve at the temple for an hour over two days and participate in “kirtan” as an act of penance. Also, the Akal Takht withdrew the “Fakhre-e-Qaum” title previously awarded to Sukhbir’s late father, Parkash Singh Badal.
Meanwhile, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht also asked the SAD working committee to officially accept Sukhbir’s resignation as party president.
The decision was taken Sukhbir admitted to past wrongdoings, which included his controversial 2007 pardon of Dera Sacha Sauda leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Meanwhile, the news of him performing the punishment went viral on social media.
