Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain has passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an official statement from his family confirmed on Monday.
In a statement, his family said the cause of death was idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
“His prolific work as a teacher, mentor and educator has left an indelible mark on countless musicians. He hoped to inspire the next generation to go further. He leaves behind an unparalleled legacy as a cultural ambassador and one of the greatest musicians of all time. The family requests privacy at this time,” his family added.
Zakir Hussain is one of the most legendary exponents of the Indian music scene and is one of the last maestros who are synonymous with a musical instrument. His Tabla skills were unlike any other, and he is widely regarded as the most gifted Tabla player in history.
Zakir is also one of the most decorated musicians in India. He is a recipient of Padma Shri Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He also holds the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; India’s highest recognition in music. The musical world now mourns the passing of this legend.
