The newly announced GST charges on Popcorn garnered outrage on social media. Many were seen criticizing the popcorn GST charges particularly the three types of taxes on popcorn.
Meanwhile, a strong reaction came out on social media about the GST on popcorn sold in movie theatres. With the 18 percent GST on caramel popcorn, the cost of watching a movie is even higher, considering the ticket prices and food expenses.
Amid the outrage, government sources clarified that the Goods and Services Tax on loose popcorn in theatres will continue to be charged at 5 percent, just like it is at restaurants.
However, when popcorn is clubbed and sold together with the movie ticket, it is taxed as per the applicable rate of the principal supply, the ticket.
As announced earlier, the taxes on popcorn are…
Unpacked and unlabelled salted popcorn: 5% GST
Pre-packed and labeled ready-to-eat popcorn: 12% GST
Caramelized popcorn: 18% GST
