India has reported two cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus currently raising concerns in China. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed the cases detected in three-month-old and eight-month-old children at a Bengaluru hospital. While one of the children has recovered, the other is still undergoing treatment.
The ICMR clarified that neither child had a history of international travel, indicating local transmission. This revelation has heightened concerns about the virus’s potential spread within India.
The ICMR and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have emphasized monitoring respiratory diseases nationwide. These cases were identified through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral infections.
Efforts are now focused on investigating the origins and transmission pathways of HMPV in India to prevent further spread.
