The Woman of many Firsts: Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is the many firsts the USA has ever seen. She is the first Black, first Indian American, first Asian Vice President and most importantly the first woman Vice President of the US elect. The speech she gave has shown the prominence she is going to have in the upcoming tenure of Joe Biden.

Kamala Harris hasn’t just created the list of many firsts. All through her career she has shown at an incredible woman she was going to be. She was the first African American woman to be elected as California’s attorney general. Time and again she fought the prejudices made by the society. She was previously called as the “Female Barack Obama” on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’.

Kamala Harris says that all that she is today is because of the way she was brought up by her Indian mother. In her book, “The Truths We Hold”, she shares about how her mother knew US was going to see her daughters as Black women, so her mother made sure to raise Kamala and her sister Maya into two confident and proud Black women.

During her speech after victory, Kamala Harris asked the citizens of US to get ready and get started. She spoke about how it was now the time to eradicate racism, but how it was more important now than ever that the country stays united and strong together.

Who better can we expect to complete this role with uttermost responsibility than the woman who has shared the African-American experience, the Asian American and the immigrant experience? We look forward to a series of positive changes because of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
