The Indian government is planning to introduce annual and lifetime toll passes on national highways. If introduced, it will be a remarkable reform that will be brought in by the central government. The transport minister Nitin Gadkari is going to finalize the proposal very soon.
As per the new proposal, the travellers on national highways can avail an annual pass to travel across India for an amount of ₹3,000. It will allow them to travel unlimited across the NH network for a year. Meanwhile, the lifetime pass for 15 years is proposed at ₹30,000.
The travellers need not take these passes separately but they will be integrated into the existing FASTag system, eliminating the need for additional cards. Currently, monthly passes are available at the toll plazas for Rs 340 per month, and the annual fee is Rs 4,080.
The total toll revenue in 2023-24 was Rs 55,000 crore and private cars’ share in this was just Rs 8,000 crore. If the new proposal get introduced, the National Highway authorities will have to forgo some income but there will be no loss of earnings.
