Gandhi’s Image On Russian Beer Cans; Netizens Angry

Mahatma Gandhi is the Father of our nation. Everyone in India, from small kids to senior citizens, has the highest regard for Gandhi. However, a Russian brewery has now disrespected Gandhi by printing his image on their beer cans.

The images are going viral, triggering a controversy and also drawing criticism from the netizens.

Russian brand Rewort produced beer cans with the image of Mahatma Gandhi, and these images surfaced online. One of those who protested this is Suparno Satpathy, politician and grandson of former Odisha chief minister Nandini Satpathy.

He urged the Indian authorities to take swift action to take up the matter with the officials in Russia.

“My humble request with PM Narendra Modi ji is to take up this matter with his friend, the President of Russia. It has been found that Russia’s Rewort is selling beer in the name of Gandhi ji,” Mr Satpathy said in his post.

The post quickly gained traction, with others also expressing their views. Many commented that it is highly unacceptable and questioned the connection between Gandhiji and alcohol.

This is not the first time that other countries have disrespected Gandhiji. Earlier in 2019, an Israeli liquor company drew criticism for featuring Mahatma Gandhi’s image on its bottles as part of Israel’s 71st Independence Day celebrations. They issued an apology following the backlash.

And then, in 2019, a Czech brewery was forced to rebrand its Mahatma India Pale Ale. Similarly, in 2015, an American brewery also issued an apology after the backlash about the usage of Gandhi’s image on beer cans and bottles.
