WhatsApp has banned 8.4 million accounts in India in one month. WhatsApp parent company Meta responded to the rising concerns about the misuse of the social media platform for fraudulent activities.
The decision to ban these accounts comes from reports by several users about fraudulent behavior.
Meta’s Transparency Report, which outlines the company’s efforts to maintain a safe user environment, highlights that these actions were taken to safeguard the platform’s integrity.
Meta banned around 8.45 million WhatsApp accounts in India to comply with provisions of Section 4(1)(d) and Section 3A(7) of the Information Technology Act.
Out of the total banned accounts, 1.66 million were immediately blocked due to serious violations and the remaining accounts were banned after investigations proving them to be suspicious and fraudulent.
