The internet is currently experiencing a storm of Ghibli-style AI-generated images. When ChatGPT announced this, the company also did not expect an overwhelming response. But, the other side of the coin is that many digital activists are raising privacy concerns over the same.
Users, captivated by the charm of transforming their photos into whimsical art, may not realize they are potentially sharing their biometric data with AI companies. This data, including facial features, could be stored and analyzed. It can lead to long-term privacy risks.
In the past, controversies like the Clearview AI case revealed how facial data could be harvested without consent. In the case of Ghibli-style images, critics speculate that OpenAI might be using this trend to gather fresh facial data for training its AI models, effectively bypassing legal restrictions associated with web-scraped images.
Experts recommend avoiding sharing sensitive images with online AI tools and opting for secure, offline apps when possible. OpenAI is yet to state the safety of the personal data for the users using the Ghibli-style AI image art version.
