Two more days and Microsoft’s Skype will be history. Though used extensively during the pandemic, the free video call platform gradually lost users due to which the company has decided to completely do away with the platform. It will go offline on May 5, 2025. The loss in the patronage is attributed to competitors like Zoom, Google meetings and WhatsApp, to which the users got attracted.
Skype has been in the market for 22 years but without any users now, the platfom is on the brink of closure. Microsoft appealed to its users to migrate to Teams as it is aiming to integrate all its communication platforms, including messaging and video calls.
Microsoft gave several months for the users to migrate to Teams from Skype and even made the migration process easy by mentioning that they can login to Teams with the Skype ID. It assured the users of transferring the chat histories and contacts also to Teams from Skype.
Microsoft stalled all paid subscriptions under various programmes like Skype Credit and Skype Calling. It informed users to complete their subscription cycle, after which all paid services would be withheld.
Though there are several other platforms performing better than Skype, Microsoft made it clear that Teams is highly advanced when compared to Skype.
