The Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London’s Gatwick airport crashed minutes after it took off. The pilot has given a Mayday call to the ATC but the signal was lost when ATC responded back. Meanwhile, it is revealed that former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was also on the flight but he is declared dead now. Shockingly, he was the second Gujarat CM to lose life in a plane crash.
Vijay Rupani served as Gujarat’s 16th Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021. Belonging to BJP, he played a crucial role in the development of the state. However, exactly six decades ago, Gujarat’s second CM Balwantrai Mehta also died when the aircraft he was travelling in, was shot down.
In September 1965, Balwantrai Mehta was flying a Beechcraft from Ahmedabad to Mithapur when the aircraft was shot down by the Pakistani Air Force during the Indo-Pak war.
Earlier in 2009, the then AP CM YS Rajasekhar Reddy died in a helicopter crash in the Nallamala forest, due to bad weather.
In 2011, Dorjee Khandu, the CM of Arunachal Pradesh, died when his helicopter crashed into a mountainside because of bad weather.
