The generally accepted age limit to vote in the elections across the globe is 18 years. Several countries, including the United States and India follow this bracket, much like most other globally relevant countries.
However, the United Kingdom has announced the plans to lower the age limit for voting to 16 years. UK Prime Minister Keir Stramer announced the plans to lower the voting age to 16 years by the time of the next general election in the country.
The United Kingdom says this as a crucial procedure to “include” the younger generations in the active political landscape. The argument is that the younger generation in the range of 16 years must also have a say in the electoral prospects as they will play a crucial role in the shaping up of the next generation.
Adding to that, the United Kingdom government Is also proposing changes to the electoral system, such as expanding forms of voter ID, moving towards automatic voter registration, and tightening rules on political donations to protect against foreign interference.
The next general election in the United Kingdom is scheduled to be held no later than 15 April 2029, so the decision to lower the age limit to 16 might come to implementation prior to that.
