Incidentally, a vegetable vendor in Bengaluru learned this the hard way, as he received a GST notice for ₹29 lakh.
The story is about one Shankar Gowda, who is based at the municipal high school grounds in Bengaluru. Shockingly, he received a GST notice for ₹29 lakh. This is due to the volume of transactions recorded over the last four years, which triggered the GST notice for the mentioned amount.
What is more interesting is that Shankar Gowda, who sells vegetables in a small shop, managed to sell produce worth ₹1.63 crore. This initiated the legal process, resulting in the GST notice.
Shankar Gowda is not a registered GST taxpayer, and that is the reason he received such a hefty penalty notice. Shortly after receiving the notice, Shankar was in absolute shock. He pleaded with the authorities about the massive fine and said he cannot afford something like this.
Soon after receiving the notice, Shankar stopped accepting UPI and online payments as he was shocked by the legal implications.
The numbers here are absolutely staggering, as a small-time vegetable vendor has been able to sell produce worth ₹1.63 crore in 4 years, which comes to roughly ₹40 lakh per year.
