Telangana Gets India’s First Outer Ring Railway Line

Telangana has received a major infrastructure boost with South Central Railway giving its in-principle approval for the Outer Ring Railway project. This will be the first-of-its-kind circular railway line in the country, planned to span 392 kilometers across eight districts and fourteen mandals of the state. The project is estimated to cost ₹12,070 crore and will include 26 new railway stations and six Rail Over Rail (ROR) bridges.

The Outer Ring Railway is expected to bring significant economic development to the surrounding regions. It will connect districts like Medak, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, and Siddipet, creating new transport and commercial linkages. Key locations on the route include Aleru, Valigonda, Gullaguda, Masayipet, and Gajwel. The alignment runs close to the Regional Ring Road (RRR), allowing for integrated road and rail-based development.

Three route options were initially proposed by the railway authorities, with the final alignment of 392.02 kilometers getting the nod from the central ministers after thorough evaluation. This chosen route stays 3 to 5 kilometers from the RRR for most of its length and 11 kilometers away in just two places. Officials believe this route will offer both proximity and better scope for development, compared to the earlier longer proposals.

The railway authorities are now preparing a detailed project report (DPR) to be submitted to the Railway Board. Once completed, the Outer Ring Railway will provide multi-modal connectivity to Hyderabad through metro, bus, and local rail services. It is expected to play a crucial role in Telangana’s urban expansion, easing transport congestion and accelerating regional growth.
