India is emerging as the second largest market for OpenAI’s products after the US. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made this striking observation during the launch of the company’s latest artificial intelligence model GPT-5. He said that India has the potential to become the largest market.
He said India was ‘incredibly fast-growing’ and praised the way both individuals and businesses in the country are adapting to use of AI in their work, in both creative and practical ways. He said OpenAI was putting special focus on the Indian market and working with the local partners to ensure that their products suit to the needs of the consumers in India, while being affordable too.
Altman said that GPT-5 is the company’s ‘best model yet’ for advanced reasoning, coding and automation-related tasks. The model is so effective that it feels like asking a real subject expert, for answers relating to technical, academic or creative fields. GPT-5 is designed to simplify user experience by making high-level capabilities accessible to everyone, including those using the free version.
In its API platform, GPT-5 will be available in three sizes: GPT-5, GPT-5 mini and GPT-5 nano.
One other exclusive features of GPT-5 in India is its improved understanding of multiple languages. It can handle more than 12 Indian languages, said Nick Turley, who heads the ChatGPT division.
In a recent podcast interview, Altman recalled how the model solved a difficult email problem with which he himself struggled. The experience, he said, made him feel ‘useless’ in comparison to the AI.
