India’s leading IT companies have sharply reduced their dependence on H-1B visas over the past five years. Big employers like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra, and LTIMindtree have cut visa filings by nearly half, showing a clear shift in strategy.
TCS still remains among the top H-1B sponsors, but its visa applications have dropped significantly compared to earlier years. Global consulting firms such as Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, and IBM are also filing fewer H-1Bs, reflecting the same trend.
In contrast, American tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Meta continue to be the top recruiters of Indian talent through the H-1B route.
Experts say multiple reasons are driving this change. Immigration policies in the US, growing political pressure to protect local jobs, and global geopolitical factors are making visa dependence more difficult. At the same time, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and automation is reshaping traditional outsourcing models, forcing Indian IT firms to rethink their operations.
To adapt, companies are now hiring more locally in the US, nearshoring work to closer regions, and relying on automation to cut costs. This marks a major shift from their earlier approach, which was heavily dependent on sending Indian employees abroad on H-1B visas.
