Is Tesla A Flop In India?

One of the leading manufacturers of electric cars across the globe, Tesla, which is headed by billionaire, Elon musk made its debut in India this July. However, the company appears to have registered rather slow start in the Indian market.

Starting from July this year, Tesla could get only 600 orders till now. To put that into perspective, the company could sell just 61 units this September despite the Navratri push.

To get a better understanding of this metric, it can be established that Tesla generally sells thousands of cars every month in the United States. Initially, when the company launched its line in India, mad rush was expected amongst the Indian buyers.

But the situation turned out to be the exact opposite as Tesla has now registered a slow start with just 600 orders in a couple of months.

There are multiple factors that could be contributing for this slow start. The price point of ₹60 lakh ex showroom price could be a factor. Another factor could be that there is a lot of competition in the EV market with multiple companies like Mahindra, Tata, BYD already dominating this segment.

Perhaps Tesla sales can get better with time as more and more Indians get acclimated to it. But for now, it needs to be said that Tesla has registered a rather slow start.
